My own research
I ranked in Google's top five but got zero clicks.
Then I grew my AI visibility 380% in three months, and that turned out to be worth far more. Here is why.
Before I sold anyone on this, I tested it on my own company. I ran it on my other practice, YPM Studio.
What I found
Last year, twelve searches put my site in Google's top five. Real searches, from people shopping for exactly what I sell. Google showed my site 662 times on those twelve searches, and not one person clicked.
That was not a ranking problem. Second place should not produce zero calls.
Here is the part that surprised me:
| The searches that… |
Where I ranked |
Visitors they sent |
| Sent nobody at all |
3rd |
0 |
| Actually sent someone |
13th |
all of them |
The better I ranked, the fewer visitors I got. That was backwards from how search had worked for twenty years.
Why it was happening
ChatGPT and Google's AI were answering the question and naming my company inside the answer. People got what they needed without ever visiting the site.
It is called zero-click search, and it is now most of how search works.
What I did about it
I stopped chasing clicks and started chasing the answer.
| Over the same three months |
Before |
After |
| My site's appearances inside AI answers, per day |
about 25 |
about 120 |
| AI tools as a source of visitors to my site |
not a source at all |
3rd largest |
| Twelve-month retainers signed by visitors from AI tools |
none |
one |
That last row mattered most. The 27 visitors who came from AI tools produced the largest contract in my pipeline. The 202 who came from ordinary search produced none.
Ranking on page one is no longer the finish line. Being named inside the answer is.
Most of what I do now is built on that finding, and the reason I can charge for it is that I measured it before I sold it.
